AH Redmi 2A

Xiaomi has held the company’s anniversary event earlier today, and has announced a number of new products. We’ve already covered the event itself and every single product they announced, but we’re here to take a closer look at the Redmi 2A, one of the smartphones that Xiaomi has unveiled. This is actually an affordable Leadcore-powered smartphone that has been talked about quite a bit in the past, anyhow, let’s see what’s what.

A mysterious Xiaomi-branded device was certified back in December, and it was powered by a Leadcore SoC. This mobile processor manufacturer is not that well known, but they do manufacture rather affordable chips. Anyhow, rumors started coming saying that the device will cost 399 Yuan ($64), until Xiaomi’s CEO said that the company has no plans of releasing a 399 Yuan ($64) device. He also said that it’s basically impossible to create such a cheap device and guarantee solid performance, so they’re not interested.

That being said, the Leadcore-powered smartphone did launch, and it’s called Redmi 2A. This is basically somewhat toned-down version of the Redmi 2 which launched in January, and it doesn’t cost as much as the rumors were saying. The Redmi 2A is priced at 599 Yuan (will cost 499 Yuan during Mi Fan Festival on April 8th). Anyhow, let’s take a look at its specs, shall we.

The Redmi 2A features a 4.7-inch display along with 1GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 8GB of eMMC 4.5 flash. Leadcore’s L1860C quad-core processor (Cortex A7 4+1-core) clocked at 1.5GHz is powering on this handset along with Mali T628MP2 GPU. 8-megapixel camera (OmniVision sensor, 5-element lens) is located on the back of this device, and you also get a 2,200mAh battery as part of the package. This handset will launch on China Mobile, and supports TD-LTE bands only.

There you have it. This handset is 100 Yuan ($16) cheaper than the Snapdragon 410-powered Redmi 2, and it seems like it will have a far more limited availability than the Redmi 2. In case you live in China and are interested, you might want to pick one up on April 8th for 499 ($81) Yuan, considering that deal is good only for one day.
