Lenovo took advantage of Mobile World Congress this week to unveil the Tab 2 A10-70, the next generation of its full-size, consumer-oriented tablet. We were there to give this upcoming model a once over.

Build & Design

The design of this tablet is quite generic; it’s an all-plastic slab with rounded corners. There will be two color options: Pearl White and Midnight Blue.

It will weigh in at 1.1 pounds (509g), making it somewhat lightweight. Overall the second-generation A10-70 will be 9.7 x 6.7 x 0.35 in. (247 x 171 x 8.9mm).

Screen

Lenovo calls this a “Portable Media Center”, and any device hoping to live up to that description needs a good display… which the Tab 2 A10-70 will deliver. It is going to include a 10.1-inch, 1920 x 1200 (Full HD) screen – a noticeably higher resolution than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 has to offer, but at $199 Lenovo’s offering will cost less. Plus, this will be an IPS display so it offers wide viewing angles, allowing two people to watch a movie at the same time.

Speaker

Continuing with the goal of making this a multimedia powerhouse, this tablet will have a speaker bar on its back that supports Dolby ATMOS 3D Cinema Sound technology, which tricks the ears so that sounds seem to be coming from different directions. This will work even better when headphones are plugged into this device.

Performance

The Lenovo Tab 2 A10-70 will be powered by a 64-bit, 1.3GHz, quad-core processor from MediaTek, and include 2GB of RAM. That’s a combination that should give this tablet decent performance. A full review will give us the opportunity to benchmark this computer, as well as see how quick it is in real-world operation.

There will be 16 GB of internal storage, and the device will have a microSD memory card slot that supports the SDXC, so it can use 64 GB or even 128 GB cards.

Software

The Tab 2 A10-70 is going to debut in April running 4.4 KitKat but Lenovo has committed to introducing an upgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop in June. Even better, the upgrade will be to a “stock” version of Google’s operating system, without any tweaks from Lenovo.

Wireless

In addition to a WiFi-only version, there will also be one with 4G LTE built in.

Camera

Although cameras are among the least-used features on tablets, this model will come with an 8MP rear-facing one, as well as a 5MP front-facing camera.

Battery Life

The next-generation A10-70 will have a 7200mAh battery, which Lenovo says will last for up to 10 hours on a single charge.

Preliminary Conclusion

Studies have shown that Millennials aren’t very interested in traditional TV, instead preferring to watch movies, shows, and other video whenever it’s convenient, on whatever device best suits them. Lenovo’s goal with the Tab 2 A10-70 is provide this group with a device that’s ideal for this by providing a relatively inexpensive tablet that includes a large, good looking display and better than average sound.

How well this model lives up to its potential in real world use will require a full review.
